CASE STUDY OF ENERGY SAVINGS
IN CITY OF MORGES, SWITZERLAND

ABSTRACT
Morges has more than seven centuries of history, and has been able to preserve all its beauty, its authenticity and its medieval originality through the years. The town's objectives are to reduce the electricity consumption of public services without investing in a change of infrastructure.

CLIENT PROFILE
Morges, a delightful and flower-decked town of 14,000 inhabitants, occupies a privileged position on the shores of Lake Geneva, opposite the majestic Mont-Blanc. The city is full of life with many tourists visiting the many events that are regularly organized. Morges has successfully combined ease of access with peace and quiet for thousands of tourists during the year.

BUSINESS NEED
The City of Morges has many public service areas that require lighting. These areas include historic sites and the museums, the market in the paved Grand-Rue in the old town, the walks on 4 km of quays, the old port, the Independence Park, the shows of an exceptional quality at the Beausobre Theater, the “Morges-sous-Rire” humor festival, and the boat docks where cruises embark. Night time lighting must retain the old-world ambience as well as meet the regional security needs for a city with many tourists and an active nightlife.

SOLUTION
The "Energy City" likes to consider itself as being at the forefront for delivering energy savings. An initial test involving the lighting in the Grand'Rue convinced the Morges town engineering departments that they should continue to install LEC highway lighting equipment and extend it to include large public buildings.

RESULTS
The LEC in the Grand'Rue reduced electrical consumption by 28% resulting in more installations around the city, such as in the Collège de Beausobre, where energy savings of 19% have been measured.
