CASE STUDY OF ENERGY SAVINGS
MACY’S LOGISTICS AND OPERATIONS – TAMPA DISTRIBUTION CENTER, FLORIDA
ABSTRACT
Founded in 1994, Macy's Logistics and Operations perform a wide range of logistics and distribution functions for all Macy's and Bloomingdale's retail divisions. The 600,000 square foot distribution center stores merchandise and vehicles and requires lighting 24/7 using HID lamps.
CLIENT PROFILE
The primary responsibility of Macy's Logistics and Operations is to ensure the efficient and timely flow of goods to the selling floor of the company's stores, bulk merchandise to customer’s homes, and fulfill internet catalog orders. Delivering the right merchandise to the right locations at the right time means large warehouses and storage facilities for products and vehicles. To this end, the division operates small-ticket and large-ticket distribution centers, coordinates transportation and shuttle deliveries, and handles vendor returns and merchandise liquidation.
BUSINESS NEED
Macy’s incorporated a sustainability policy that strives to reduce the use of scarce resources in a meaningful way; “Macy's, Inc. will pursue ongoing programs to consume less electricity and water. Specifically, Macy's, Inc., will seek to: Reduce our total use of energy by another 10 percent to 15 percent by 2010, recognizing that we have already reduced our energy consumption by about 9 percent over the past five years.”
SOLUTION
The Lighting Energy Controller from Power Electronics was introduced to Macy’s in order to reduce the electrical consumption of the entire facility. An initial site survey found five (5) locations where the LEC be installed and produce immediate savings. Macy’s agreed to install one (1) unit in order to verify the actual savings results. The data was logged and the results indicated a 31.8% savings.
RESULTS
The installation of the other four (4) Lighting Controllers was completed with no disruption of the operation. Power Electronics coordinated the complete installation and start up. After the units were installed, the results were data logged and the savings report was issued to Macy’s. All the units performed as promised.
“We recommend looking at what they can do for you.”
